Here's how we work, start to finish. Describe the tree over the phone, where it stands and what you can see, and you'll hear a typical price range for that kind of job, with the firm written number following a visit to your yard.

What do we look at before we quote a tree job?

We walk the property first. We note which way the tree leans, what's underneath it, and what's within reach if something lets go.

If a limb looks cracked high up and we can't see it clearly from the ground, we tell you that. We won't hand you a firm number for a job we can't see all of. A hand saw handles small limbs and cleanup cuts, but it's not the tool for a trunk or a loaded limb over a roof. That's why we look before we decide how the job gets done.

These questions come up on tree removal jobs. Shopping for tree service in Augusta-Richmond County? Our home page has more.

How far back does everyone stand when a tree comes down?

Everyone except the person on the saw stands back two full tree-heights from a felling, minimum. On a roped fall, ground workers keep back 1.5 times the tree's height at minimum.

The ground crew also gets a retreat path worked out ahead of any sawing. If the tree doesn't go where we expected, nobody is deciding where to run at that moment. It takes a few minutes and we do it on every job, including ones that look simple.

A neighbor's car or your fence inside those distances gets flagged ahead of the job, since it can change how we bring the tree down.

What will the job cost?

Stump grinding in Augusta-Richmond County runs $150 to $475. Emergency tree removal runs $800 to $5,750. Those ranges are wide because the jobs are.

Price climbs with the amount of tree or stump, with fences, roofs or power lines in the way, and with damage or a tree already lying on a structure. Emergency work sits at the high end of the scale because it's unplanned and usually involves a tree that's already damaged.

Call for a ballpark on your type of job. The firm figure follows a look at the site and is written down before any work begins.

What don't you have to figure out before you call?

Species, trunk diameter and budget can all stay blank on the first call. Tell us roughly where the tree stands, how big it looks, and what's near it. From your description we'll say if it sounds like a routine job or one that needs eyes on it first.

You can take the quote home, compare it, and call back, or decide not to do the work at all. That first call commits you to nothing.

How do Augusta storms change a removal?

Straight-line thunderstorm winds here have uprooted trees and brought down limbs. Before any cut on a storm-hit tree, we look over the whole canopy and whatever sits under it.

A tree that lost a major limb is not the tree it was before. The wound is open and the remaining canopy is lopsided, so a removal that looks simple can turn out to carry more weight than it appears to once the cutting starts. Augusta's long, hot, humid summers mean much of this work happens in the middle of that storm season.

If the tree is standing and nothing has changed since the storm, you usually have time to get a proper look. If it's leaning toward the house, or a limb is hanging and could drop, don't wait. Call us and say so on the first call.

Ready to have us look at your tree?

Call and describe the tree: where it stands, how tall it looks, and what's near it. We'll tell you roughly what the work runs and whether we need to come out first. We handle tree removal and stump grinding across Augusta-Richmond County, and the written quote comes before any cutting.
