How it gets done
Jobs differ, but these steps are typical:
- Remove dead, damaged, and crossing branches, then consider weak branches and branches growing toward the center of the crown.
- Retain strongly attached, wide-angled branches where possible, and remove weak, narrow V-shaped unions with included bark.
- For a large limb, make an underside cut several inches out from the branch collar to help prevent bark tearing.
- Make a second cut farther out to remove the branch’s weight, then make the final cut just outside the branch collar and branch bark ridge.
- For a reduction cut, shorten a branch to a lateral branch about one-third to one-half the diameter of the part being removed.
- Avoid removing more than one-quarter of the living crown at one time; spread larger reductions over successive years.
