Cabling and bracing reinforces a weak union without removing wood. Northgate Tree Service does that work in Augusta-Richmond County. Our first move is to stand under the fork and inspect the union. The paperwork afterward spells out what we found, which rods we'd install, and whether the tree needs anything at all.
What does cabling and bracing actually involve?
We drill a threaded steel rod completely through the weak fork, fit washers and nuts on both ends, and tighten the terminations so the two sections can't spread apart. Where a cable is part of the plan, it attaches to eye bolts and ends in cable dead-end grips.
Rod count and placement get planned first, and the fork's wood is checked for decay or lost strength before any drilling. A rod through soft wood has nothing solid to hold on to. If the wood has gone soft, we'll tell you the tree may not be a candidate. A photo can't show soft wood, so no quote goes out until someone has put hands on the fork.

What does bracing cost?
Expect $125 to $550 for bracing rods, a range you can get by phone.
If we find decay that wasn't visible from the ground, we talk about what that changes before we go any further. The written quote comes before any work starts, and it lists what we're installing and where.

How do I know if my tree needs bracing?
Look for a split or crack running into a fork, bark cracking where two major branches meet, or a heavy limb that seems to pull away from the rest of the crown. Any of those can mean the union is weak. None of them automatically means it needs hardware, so the answer comes from examining the wood.
Not every crack or fork needs a rod. If the union is still sound, we'll tell you to leave it alone and look at it again after the next storm. If the wood is too far gone, we'll say that too, and it's a different conversation. Winters in Augusta are short, though occasional freezes bring some freeze-thaw movement, so a crack that's already open shouldn't sit for long.
What happens when I call?
You tell us about the tree's size, the spot where it splits or forks, and whether the problem is visible from the ground. We use that to decide whether a site visit makes sense, and we give you the typical $125 to $550 range for bracing rods. Nothing gets decided on that call.
You don't need a budget in mind, or a firm opinion on whether the tree is worth saving. We come out, check the union, tell you whether bracing is the right move, and write up what we found. Northgate Tree Service would rather tell you a tree needs nothing than sell you a rod it doesn't.
